The SDG Career Path
As a new hire, you will most likely begin your career at Strategic Decisions Group as a consultant, associate consultant, or analyst, based on your professional experience and area of graduate study.
No matter what your position, you’ll thrive, learn, and grow in a supportive environment that values diversity, collaboration, and personal-professional balance. At SDG, you will work with clients, not simply for them, and be trusted to rely on your own insights, judgment, and skills—rather than on rigid mandates—to guide work decisions and actions.

Engagement Managers and Experienced Hires
Analysts usually have a master’s degree in business or engineering with little or no relevant experience. They have superior analytic and communication skills and participate in several aspects of client projects. With experience, an analyst has the potential to develop into an associate consultant on our staff.
As integral members of project teams, analysts:
- Conduct business research and assessment;
- Interview clients and industry experts;
- Create financial and decision models;
- Perform market and cost analyses; and
- Write and deliver presentations to clients.
Associate consultants (ACs) usually have a master’s degree in business or engineering with relevant business or industry experience or a PhD in business or engineering with limited experience. They contribute to a varied mix of intellectually challenging projects. With experience, an AC has the potential to develop into a fully autonomous consultant on our staff.
Project assignments might include:
- Model development and evaluation;
- Problem formulation and analysis;
- Business research and assessment;
- Client interviews;
- Generation of alternative strategies;
- Meeting facilitation; and
- Client presentations.
Most SDG consultants have MBAs or PhDs, along with relevant business or industry experience. Consultants enjoy considerable control and flexibility in mapping their first years at the company and in gaining experience across a wide range of projects.
With the guidance and support of senior engagement managers and partners, new consultants participate in all aspects of projects:
- Problem formulation and analysis;
- Business research and assessment;
- Client interviews;
- Generation of alternative strategies;
- Model development and evaluation;
- Meeting facilitation; and
- Presentations to clients.
Engagement Managers and Experienced Hires
Engagement managers typically have MBAs or PhDs and significant business or consulting experience. An experienced hire usually joins the firm as an engagement manager; in limited instances he or she may be brought on as a principal (a pre-partner position) or, less commonly, as a partner.
An engagement manager enjoys considerable control and flexibility in managing his or her career at SDG, with the opportunity to work on a varied mix of projects. Engagement managers manage all aspects of client engagements and supervise analysts and entry-level consultants. Responsibilities include:
- Problem formulation and analysis;
- Business assessment;
- Alternative generation;
- Model development and evaluation;
- Meeting facilitation; and
- Presentations to clients.
